Kidnappers in NIgeria are surprising!!!
They were excited after receiving a call from a team in Rivers state for a contract they were to be awarded
These criminals left Delta state on the instruction of their so to called boss in other to the contract, but ended up in the hands of their abductors Three kidnap victims, Mr Okelezo Wilfred, who is the general manager of Jofad Global Services, a construction firm in Warri,


Seeing how this incident happened, Wilfred said said they became victims because of their desperation for a contract. Wilfred, who is now treating injuries sustained in the buttocks as a result of the daily flogging, further said the kidnappers later demanded for N150 million as ransom from their boss. He said: “I felt an excruciating pain when they (kidnappers) flogged me. Every day, they flogged us 10 times. They did not flog Mr. Roland because of his age. Now, I have wounds in my buttocks.

“We got a little relief when they asked Mr. Ukojevo to do the flogging because his (strokes of cane) was not as painful as when the kidnappers flogged us by themselves.” In his own narration, Ukojevo, with swollen legs, said one of the kidnappers, claiming to be in charge of the contract to them, took the victims somewhere in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of Rivers state.

“Somebody told us there was a job and that we should come and look at it. We came in from Delta to Ahoada and when we met the man, he said he would take us to his boss somewhere in Ahoada. “He later took us to somewhere in Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, where we were hijacked. “We were taken to three different locations in the bush. They took us to a hut where we were blindfolded. We were there for six hours. “They later took us away from that hut to another place where we spent another six hours and later, they took us across a river and we trekked for about two hours,” he said. READ ALSO: Kidnappers of Lagos pupils give families 48-hour ultimatum They were rescued by men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the victims said they had learnt their lessons. “They are contractors from Warri, in Delta state. Someone called them from Rivers state that they had a contract for them in Rivers and so, the manager, site engineer and two others were mandated by their company to come down to Rivers state to see and negotiate how the job would be done. “Unfortunately, they did not know that it was a set-up by the kidnappers. There was no contract; it was just a scam to get them out of Delta state and get them kidnapped,” the NSCDC confirmed. Kidnapping for ransom has become a major crime in many parts of Nigeria. In Lagos state , the House of Assembly is preparing a bill that would ensure stricter punishments for kidnappers.

Delta state, as well as his colleagues, Roland Ukojevo and Israel Isawoele, took out time to recount their experiences in the hands of their abductors recently. According to The Punch, the victims said they were daily given 10 strokes of the cane for the 12 days they spent in the hands of their abductors. After every beating, they were fed with plantain and beans.

ADMISSIONS::JAMB set to scrap general cut-offs for UTME

JAMB has said that it may cancel the use of general cut-off marks for candidates of the UTME

The issue of cut-off marks as currently being used for admission, it said, should be subjected to national debate by stakeholders. The spokesperson of JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, gave the indication in a statement he issued on behalf of its Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, on Sunday evening in Abuja.

He said a situation where universities, polytechnics and colleges of education were subjected to the same cut-off marks was no longer tenable because it prevented the institutions from admitting candidates of their choice. Tertiary institutions, he sated, should be allowed to determine the kind of candidates they want to admit. He added that there was an urgent need to reconsider the current cut-off point of 180 for admission in order to strengthen access to education, particularly for the less-privileged. Benjamin said: “The uniformity of cut-off marks doesn’t make any sense when colleges (of education) and polytechnics admit for national certificate of education and diplomas, while universities admit for degrees. Yet, we subject them to the same cut-off marks, thereby starving these tiers of institutions from admitting candidates who, if not engaged, may likely become easy prey to social vices. “This means that if a University wants 250 as minimum cut-off marks, why not? And if another wants less so be it. If a Polytechnic like YABATECH (Yaba College of Technology) wants 250 as cut-off marks, let them admit and if Gboko Polytechnic in Benue State where I come from wants less than 200, let them admit.

“Institutions should be known for their individual quality and not collective standards. This will foster positive competition for the overall good of our tertiary institutions. It is critical for all notable stakeholders to rethink the issue of cut-off marks.

“I am calling for a national debate on the propriety of cut off marks; institutions should be allowed to determine the kind of candidates they want.” JAMB also expressed worry over the class opportunities as it affects the distribution of admission resources. The organisation said, “The rich have multiple opportunities which include going abroad for studies while the poor only have the opportunity of struggling for the scarce spaces here. “They come back and they are integrated while the poor can’t afford it and are forever denied the opportunity of education. Let institutions admit what they want according to their needs.” JAMB urged Nigerians to look at the decision critically for it to take action that would be for the good of the education sector, The Punch reports. In the same vein, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has revealed that they have scrapped the use of scratch cards for any transactions and services. The reason given for the scrapping was that it was archaic and subject to fraud. On another note, the registrar, also demanded that the federal government should revert to the former system where serving vice chancellors of universities were made chairmen of the governing board of JAMB. Dr Fabian Benjamin the spokesperson for JAMB, said, the decision to scrap the use of scratch cards was announced by the registrar in Abuja in a paper he delivered during a meeting of the association of vice chancellors of Nigerian universities. In lieu of the scratch cards, the platform of pin vending will be used, in order to check all forms of fraudulent practices which was prevalent with the use of scratch cards. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Senate on Thursday, October 13, extended the validity period of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to three years against the present one year. The extension was sequel to the amendment of the Act establishing the JAMB and it scaled through third reading today. To this end, results obtained from the board by candidates seeking admission into universities are expected to last for three years. The Senate adopted the recommendation that the UTME examination should have a validity period of three years to reduce the financial burden on parents.

THE outcome of two online opinion polls commissioned by Saturday Vanguard to feel the pulse of Nigerians regarding increasing calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to rijig his ministers revealed that many believed that an urgent reorganisation of the President’s cabinet would be key to resolving the perception of inactivity about the Buhari administration.

Participants also used the platform to appraise the performance of the ministers and provide feedback to the Federal Government in line with their conviction on how best the administration could actualise its change agenda. The polls posed the following questions: Who among Buhari’s ministers do you think should be dropped? Should President Muhammadu Buhari change his cabinet? The key highlights of the polls revealed the following:  Many were worried about the economy and power sector;  There was  anger over the performance of President Buhari’s team; Majority wanted the sports minister removed; The  ethnic fault lines in the country sharply played out

and Absence of optimism in  the manner the country was  generally being governed. Of the 1,129 responses recorded as at 6: 40pm yesterday,  687 respondents representing 65.9 percent  wanted a  change of cabinet. Those, who didn’t want a change of cabinet, were 359 representing 34.4 percent of those, who made their stance known. Apart from simply indicating their position, most explained the reasons for wanting certain changes in the leadership of most ministries. In responding, most of   the respondents identified the economy and power as critical sectors that demanded extra efforts in order to get the country out of its current economic troubles. While many, who disclosed their stand in that regard, demanded a change in the management of Nigeria’s economy, others expressed confidence in the leadership of the power ministry but demanded the split of the office to allow efficiency. The ministries of Sports, Finance, Education, and Communication were mostly mentioned by those, who called for a change in their respective leaderships, while Petroleum, Agriculture and Solid Minerals ministries were spared of the calls for reorganisation by majority. The Ministry of Foreign of Affairs topped the ministerial rating, with all respondents not mentioning it among those that required change. However, it was observed that ethnic sentiments, party affection, and patriotism influenced the manner of responses recorded.
